Thinking Like a Magician

"The Year of No Fear" - January 2008

My friend and fellow speaker Paul Frazer doesn't like New Year's resolutions. He says they don't work. I can't say that I disagree. How many people do you know who have the same resolutions year after year? In his excellent regular email Paul suggested instead of making a list of resolutions, that you declare this "The Year of ..." I took this challenge to heart and have decided that, for me, 2008 is "The Year of No Fear." Though I am generally a pretty outgoing person, at times I let fear get in my way. I hesitate to get into situations that may be uncomfortable - networking meetings for example. Sometimes this 'fear' even causes me to avoid those opportunities. This happened when we first moved to Toronto. I spent weeks unable to get out and meet people. When I finally was able to overcome this fear and go to a networking meeting, an amazing thing happened - I had a great time. After the meeting was over, I felt almost euphoric. Paradoxically, the thing that had paralyzed me was the very thing that gave me the most satisfaction. Once I overcame that fear, I was unstoppable!

So, by declaring this "The Year of No Fear", I'm challenging myself to get over my fears and get out there and make the most of each and every situation I find myself in. Not only that, but also to consciously put myself into situations that scare me.

So, I'll pass Paul's excellent challenge on to you. What do you want this to be "The Year of"? Take some time to decide what's important to you for the upcoming year and then commit to it. You can keep it private, but I recommend that you share it with at least someone close to you (you can even post it on Paul's blog, along with lots of other people.) And be sure to put it in writing and hang it where you can see it daily. I've even made a sign for the wall of my office so that every day when I walk in, I'm challenged to make things happen. Now it's your turn - decide what you want 2008 to be and then go make it happen!
