Thinking Like a Magician

"Change" - February 2008

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said "Nothing endures but change." That's certainly been the case in my life. I've moved across the continent more times than I care to think about. Each change has been a big upheaval and it's never been a pleasant experience. Yet somehow, good things have always come out of the transitions. When we moved from my home state of Michigan to Oregon, I missed my family and friends terribly and was in a completely unfamiliar land. But out of this massive change, I shifted away from teaching photography and started performing magic professionally - a very positive benefit. Five years later when we moved from Oregon to Ontario, I left another group of friends and a place that had finally started to feel like home. After another period of adjustment and melancholy, I started presenting motivational speeches along with the magic and that has given me immense pleasure. As much as I've hated going through these major changes, I know that a lot of good has come from them and I don't regret a thing.

Now I'm faced with another kind of change - the biggest change of my life. A person who has been a rock-solid constant presence my entire life is no longer with me. At this point, too near the grief, I have a hard time seeing what good will come of this change. But my past dealings with change have taught me that I don't need to be able to see the future good - it will just happen. And if the good that comes is commensurate with the severity of this change, then I have something absolutely incredible to look forward to.
