Thinking Like a Magician "Envisioning" - December 2007 The power of the human mind is incredible. We can imagine fantastic scenes just using our mind's eye. I recently attended the pre-production premier of a whimsical new short opera. The final production will include elaborate costumes, sets and dances. None of those things have been created yet, so the director simply read the descriptions of what would be happening on the stage. At first, he described the setting and the costumes. Then, as the opera players sang their parts, he described the pieces of decorations that would come and go from the stage (including a 6-foot-tall piece of angel-food cake.) As I sat there in a converted warehouse loft, watching the opera singers dressed in jeans and other street clothes, I could actually "see" the costumes, the dances and the decorations. With the help of simple descriptions read from a page, my mind created elaborate visions - perhaps even better than what the opera company will eventually build.
